Truth is like RCT it hurts but heals ; lie is like pain killer it gives instant relief, but its side effects remains forever . Lie is the base of all sins.We lie to hide our sins. We lie when we know that we are doing wrong .Speak truth be safe✊🏻

Miswak toothbrush

Low periodontal needs have been reported among Saudi adults who used Miswak.

Furthermore,Gazi Et Al compared the periodontal status of habitual Miswak users and toothbrush and showed that the former had lower gingival bleeding and interproximal bone height than the toothbrush users.

The authors also indicated that there were no significant differences in plaque scores and pocket depths between the two groups.

In the northern Kenya ,Carl and Zambon suggested that advanced periodontal disease was very rare among persons over age of 50 years who used Miswak for teeth brushing .

Eid Et Al reported that there was no significant differences in gingival or bleeding indices between Miswak and modern toothbrush users.

Mechanical effect of Miswak

  • Eid-et-al reported that the majority of Miswak users applied Miswak to both aspects of their teeth and no significant differences in facial plaque scores were noted between the Miswak and toothbrush users.
  • Additional studies suggested Miswak efficacy to be comparable with that of the conventional toothbrush.
  • Demonstrated plaque scores to be significantly lower following the use of Miswak as compared with the conventional toothbrush used without toothpaste.

Studies on Miswak

  • Use of chewing sticks for cleaning teeth is practiced in many countries including India,Pakistan,Tanzania,Ethiopia and in Middle East Countries.
  • Danielsons B ,1989 Miswak to be as effective as the tooth brush in removing oral deposits.
  • Danielsons B, et -al showed that there was a reduction of plaque on the front teeth more than the posterior teeth and recommended Miswak as a tool for oral hygiene.

Studies on Miswak

The Wrigley Company made a study on Miswak which was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The study found that mints laced with Miswak extract were 20 times more effective in killing bacteria than ordinary mints.

A small testimony to this fact is that after half an hour, the mints laced with Miswak extract killed 60% of the bacteria where as the ordinary mints managed only 3.6%.

Studies on Miswak

  • The WHO recommended the use of the Miswak in 1986,but in 2000 an international consensus report on oral hygiene concluded that further research was needed to document the effect of the Miswak.
  • Some of this further research has been done on a population of 203 ,and concluded,in turn, ” that the periodontal status of Miswak users in this Sudanese population is better than that of toothbrush users.
  • Yet another comparative study conducted on a sampling of 480 Saudi Arabian adults found that the level of need for periodontal case in the sample chosen is low when compared with the findings of similar studies undertaken in other countries.
  • The frequent use of the Miswak was associated with a lower need for treatment.

Maintenance of Miswak

    • A Miswak should be one hand span in length when selected.
    • If it becomes dry,it should be soaked in water to soften the end bristles.
    • The end should be cut afresh to ensure hygiene and should never be stored near a toilet or sink .
    • The brush may be created by cutting Salvadora persica ‘s branches instead of it’s roots ;keeping in mind that the trees roots can retain moisture more than its branches.
    • This favours long term use.
